HARLAN JEFFRIES ANSWERED on the third ring.

“H?”

“Yeah.”

“’Tis me. Shaun.”

“How are you? I didn’t recognize this number. What’s going on?”

“Long story. Are you going to be home tomorrow night?” asked Shaun, glancing at the newscaster now muted in front of a large weather map.

“Sure.”

“I need a favor. Can you meet me?”

“Of course. You know that. Anything,” replied Harlan.

Shaun explained an abbreviated version of the Zip-Net issue and asked for his help in checking out Abigail’s family home in Clarksdale.

“Where are you right now?” asked Harlan.

“At my house in Tyson’s Corner. We’ll be in Mississippi tomorrow night. It’ll be late.”

“No problem. But that’s a long drive for one day. Have you seen the weather report?”

Shaun focused on the television to see computerized bolts of lightning and clouds covering the southeastern half of the map. “Yeah. It’s on right now.”

“Tomorrow is going to be ugly. Be careful, and call me when you know what time you’ll be getting in. You’re welcome to stay with us here in Starkville. Gina’d be glad to see you. We’ll put you up.”

“Thank you but no. I’ve got…problems. I won’t bring them to your house.”

“Shaun? After everything you did for Gina, Adam and me? Spiriting us out of Texas and letting us stay at your house when everyone and their dog was looking for us? You know we’re here if you need anything.”

Harlan was a friend who really cared and understood. One of the only people in his life who knew about the fiasco in Iraq with Gregor and Storm’s Edge. Excepting Harlan, Shaun had acquaintances only. And there were parts of himself that he’d buried so deeply, he’d forgotten. Forgotten what it felt like to have a friend who knew all the dark places inside and still reached out.

“Right. I know. I just…I’ll meet you. It’ll probably be very late when I call, H.”

“S’okay. Gina’s not sleeping anyway. Baby’s due any day now—she hasn’t been able to get comfortable. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.”

Shaun hung up. Encouraged for the first time in a long time. Maybe, just maybe, this was going to be okay.
